Saturday 8 June 2024, Villa Lontana Records and Diaccialone present Music for Buffaloes a project envisioned as a series of sound performances where artists are invited to engage with the rural and natural environment of the Tuscan Maremma countryside through live and recorded sound.
The first appointment of Music For Buffaloes presents Synaulia, the iconic group of experimental archaeology applied to music and dance founded in 1995 by Walter Maioli, Luce Maioli and Natalie van Ravenstein. Synaulia’s research focuses on the application of historical investigation into ancient music and dance, in particular to the Etruscan and Roman periods, through the rediscovery and reconstruction of ancient musical instruments. The name derives from the term of Greek origin "synaulia", which in ancient Rome indicated an instrumental group composed mainly of wind instruments. The group collaborated with Giorgio Albertazzi in several theatre productions and created sounds for The Gladiator by Ridley Scott, A Midsummer Night's Dream by Michael Hoffman and the television series Rome, Empire, Nativity and Agora. Over the years, Synaulia put together an extensive archive of archaeology and music that collects hundreds of musical instruments, prototypes, artefacts, originals and replicas from all over the world, together with recordings dedicated to nature, prehistory and antiquity.
Diaccialone is a family farm deeply rooted in the territory, specialising in breeding Buffaloes and producing cheese. The farm is set in a wild landscape that was once the home of the Etruscans, an ancient and enchanting civilisation. Buffaloes roam this beautiful land that still echoes the presence of the Etruscan mystical culture that cherished nature and music.
Villa Lontana Records is an experimental and independent record label based in Rome focused on archival and unreleased material from the electronic avant-garde and contemporary sound-art scene. The label works closely with Walter Maioli since 2019.
